Vehicles

If you are travelling by car or other vehicle, you need to specify the exact dimensions of your vehicle and report the cargo, if any, when you book your trip.

Vehicle transportation bookings

Fees for transporting vehicles are divided into categories according to the length and height of the vehicle. Please note that additional luggage attached to the outside of the vehicle, e.g., a container for skis, a kayak or a bicycle mounted on the roof of the vehicle, is taken into account when determining the dimensions. The dimensions of the vehicle must be clarified before making a booking for transportation, because if the dimensions are determined inaccurately and, consequently, the booking is made incorrectly, it will be subject to a surcharge. Moreover, in this case, the transportation may be refused at the pre-boarding check-in.

  • When making a booking, specify the registration number of the car, and note if the vehicle is electric. We recommend that you reserve your car transportation in advance.
    • A moped, motorcycle, and cargo bike are booked as a motorcycle.
    • A motorcycle with a small trailer or sidecar, as well as three- or four-wheeled vehicles, are booked as a car.
    • A bicycle and its trailer are booked as a bicycle.
    • An electric bike, electric scooter and other one- or two-wheeled vehicles are booked as an electric bike.
  • Vehicle transportation may not be booked, or a vehicle may not be transported without a driver.
  • All private vehicles must have valid registration numbers.
  • Transportation of a bus is only possible with a group reservation. The cost of transportation depends on the route. Space for trucks and cars weighing more than 3,500 kg in professional use are booked through the Cargo Department.
  • The check-in for bicycle and electric scooter riders is done at the car check-in, and they board the ship via the car deck.
  • Smaller electric vehicles (such as e-bikes, kick scooters, etc.) are stored in designated areas on the car deck. The battery must not be removed, taken off-board, or charged in public spaces.
  • Electrical connections for passenger vehicles are not available on the car deck.

Check-in at harbour

Vehicles must arrive for check-in and be ready for loading onto the car deck 30 minutes before departure; in Tallinn, 45 minutes before departure. Vehicles over 2.4 metres high must be at the check-in point at least 45 minutes before departure. We reserve the right to cancel reservations if a passenger is late for check-in.

Please verify that your destination harbour is correctly indicated on the sheet issued to you, which you should attach to your rear-view mirror so that you can be guided to the correct space on the car deck.

If your car is placed on an upper deck, please note there is a risk of falling. For everyone's safety, always keep an eye on children and fellow travellers.

Good to know

  • Auto alarm

The movement of the vessel can cause the car alarm to go off if it is left on during the trip. We recommend that you turn off the alarm before your trip to avoid unnecessary disturbance while sailing.

  • Flammable liquids in individual containers

Flammable liquids in individual containers and barbecue charcoal cannot be transported on the car deck.

  • Gas cylinders

If you want to transport gas in your caravan, please make sure that the location of the gas bottle is marked and that the main valve is closed and sealed with adhesive tape that can be obtained from our staff. The carriage of gas cylinders in other vehicles is not permitted.

  • Vehicle recharging

Vehicles cannot be recharged on the car deck. There are recharging points in some harbours.

  • Vehicle heater

Webasto or similar vehicle heaters must not be in operation on the car deck.

  • Pets on the car deck for short journeys

Pets cannot be left on the car deck during the journey.

The exception is the Helsinki-Tallinn route in the period of 1 Oct–30 April. Pets can be taken onto the passenger deck for free, but the trip itself must be booked in advance. A passenger who leaves a pet on the car deck during the period of 1 Oct–30 April does so at own responsibility. In some circumstances, such as unusually cold or hot weather, Viking Line reserves the right to prohibit passengers from carrying pets on the car deck.

  • Other animals transporting

For information on transporting other animals, visit the websites of the relevant authorities in Sweden, Finland and Estonia.

  • Importing a used car

The vehicle must have a registration code. The vehicle must have an import permit or be registered in a European Economic Area country. The driver must have a certificate of ownership (e.g., a sales contract) if the car is not registered in the name of a person who is a co-passenger.

  • General rules of conduct on the car deck

Personal belongings needed on a sea voyage should be placed within easy reach before you enter the car deck.

For the duration of the voyage, put the handbrake on and put the car in gear, or set the park lock in a car with an automatic transmission.

Move carefully on the car deck because other large and small vehicles are pulling into it at the same time. For safety reasons, the car deck is closed while the vessel is in transit. The car deck is closed immediately after departure and, depending on the route, is opened 15–30 minutes before arrival at the destination harbour.

  • Mandatory equipment

The vehicle must have a country ID, such as the letters FIN/S or an EU ID number. Find out before your trip what equipment requirements other countries may have. For example, in Estonia it is mandatory to have safety vests, a first aid kit and a fire extinguisher.

When boarding a ferry, you must have your original vehicle registration certificate.

  • Insurance

Insurance practices differ from country to country. For a car, an international insurance policy must be obtained from the company where the car was insured, as proof that the insurance is in force. The insurance is accepted in European countries, including the Baltics and Poland.

Before you travel, check with your insurance company that the car, travel and luggage insurance policies are valid.

  • Power of Attorney

If the driver of the car is not mentioned in the registration certificate as the owner or person entitled to use the car, they must have an international power of attorney proving their right to drive the car, including abroad.
