Make a more sustainable choice for your next journey. You can now choose to travel completely fossil-free by adding a small supplement for 100% renewable biofuel under the climate options when booking your trip to Turku or Helsinki.
Now you can travel 100% fossil-free

Travel completely fossil-free with Viking Line
Viking Line is actively working to reduce emissions, with fuel playing a key role in these efforts. Today, Viking Glory and Viking Grace operate on a combination of renewable biofuel and natural gas. We also use food waste from our ships as a raw material for producing biofuel.
You can now choose to travel completely fossil-free on any of our vessels. When you select the climate option while booking, the emissions from your journey are balanced by our use of an equivalent amount of renewable biofuel on our ships. The more passengers who choose fossil-free travel, the greater the share of biofuel used in shipping — and the greater the climate benefit.

What is Viking Line's climate option?
You can now choose a completely fossil-free journey on our vessels. When you select the climate option while booking, the emissions from your journey are balanced by our use of an equivalent amount of renewable biofuel on our ships. The more passengers who choose fossil-free travel, the more renewable biofuel we use in our operations — increasing the overall climate benefit.
-
Why does Viking Line offer a climate option?
We are continuously working to reduce our climate impact in different ways. Fuel is the single largest source of emissions from our operations, which is why we offer the option of fossil-free travel. It gives our customers a practical way to contribute to more sustainable travel on the Baltic Sea.
-
How can you offer a climate option on ships that cannot run on biogas?
The fossil-free option is based on the emissions generated by your specific journey, while influencing the fuel we use across our operations. This means that the renewable biofuel does not necessarily have to be used on the particular sailing you are travelling on. Instead, we guarantee that we will purchase and use an amount of renewable biofuel equivalent to the emissions from your journey. This helps reduce overall emissions by increasing the share of renewable fuel used in our operations.
-
How do I know that Viking Line is really using biofuel?
We set strict requirements for our suppliers and carefully select whom we do business with. When it comes to biofuel, we demand that the fuel meets the requirements of the EU Renewable Energy Directive (RED) and that all production, sales and procurement of raw materials for production are scrutinised and certified by an independent third party. The biogas we take on board the vessels always comes with a sustainability certificate (Proof of Sustainability) that specifies the raw materials used for production, the origin of the raw materials and fuel, and more. The biogas we use is also ISCC-certified.
-
What is ISCC?
International Sustainability & Carbon Certification (ISCC) is an international certification system approved by the European Commission that covers all types of biobased raw materials and renewable energy sources for the energy sector. It includes sustainability criteria such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions, sustainable use of land, protection of natural biospheres and social sustainability.
-
Why should the passenger pay for biofuel?
Viking Line continuously invests in technologies, fuels, logistics, research and development to reduce its carbon footprint and achieve its long-term goal of freeing itself from fossil energy. Biofuels are a step towards a more sustainable future, but due to their much lower production volume compared to fossil counterparts, they are also significantly more expensive. Growing demand will, over time, increase production and reduce costs for both maritime companies and passengers. The more people choose biogas for their journey, the better it will be for both their wallets and the environment.

What is the cost of the biofuel surcharge?
Per passenger/one-way Price Stockholm–Helsinki v.v. €9 Stockholm–Turku v.v. €6 Stockholm–Åland v.v. €4.5 Stockholm–Mariehamn v.v. (Gabriella/Viking Cinderella) €4.50 Turku–Åland v.v. €3.50 Helsinki–Mariehamn v.v. €5 Helsinki–Tallinn v.v. €6 -
Where does biogas come from?
The biogas used on Viking Line's vessels always originates from Europe (mainly Denmark and Central Europe). The biogas is transported through pipelines to Norway, where it is liquefied for use on board ships. From Norway, the liquefied gas is transported to a terminal in Pori, Finland, where it is loaded onto a bunker vessel, which then transfers it to Viking Glory and Viking Grace for use as fuel. Since each delivery of biogas comes with a sustainability certificate, we can always trace the origin of the gas.
-
How often do ships take on biofuel?
Ships regularly take on board biofuel as they are refuelled. The frequency of biofuel refuelling depends largely on the demand from our customers.
